What is IP Phone?

An IP phone (VoIP desk phone) connects to the internet or office network to place calls — from basic models to executive displays.

IP phone is the desk phone of the VoIP era: it plugs into your network (or WiFi) and places calls over the internet instead of a copper line. Ranges run from basic lobby models through executive color touchscreens.

Buying context

Three things to check before buying hardware:

  1. Certification — each UCaaS platform certifies specific models (Poly, Yealink, Cisco). A “SIP phone” works broadly but lacks platform button integration; certified models are worth it for everyday users.
  2. BYOD policies — many providers re-provision existing compatible SIP phones free or cheap; OnSip class providers built reputations on it.
  3. Bundles — most providers include or deeply discount phones at contract commitment (see the negotiation guide). Paying full retail for handsets is a rookie line item.
