What is QoS?
QoS (Quality of Service) is network configuration that prioritizes voice traffic over less sensitive traffic, protecting call quality on busy links.
QoS (Quality of Service) is how a network protects call quality: routers recognize voice packets (marked DSCP EF) and prioritize them ahead of downloads, backups and video, so conversations stay clear even when the connection is busy.
Why it matters when buying
VoIP problems are usually QoS problems. Any provider can demo clean calls on an idle network; what matters is behavior at 4pm when someone starts a cloud backup. Ask every provider the same question: what QoS do you configure on our edge, and who owns it? — managed options (SD-WAN, Bigleaf-class services) make QoS someone else’s job, which is often exactly the point.
